Dates Available:

  • Mon 31 March - Fri 4 April 2025 (Mon - Fri)

5 day course: 10am- 4pm

A 5 day Masterclass delivered by award-winning artist and tutor Peter Keegan.

This masterclass, one of Peter's most popular and enjoyable, will give you the opportunity to explore a range of contemporary approaches to portrait painting in oils.

During the 5 days, Peter will demonstrate and guide you through his exciting and dynamic approach and style to portraiture. From using a bright, colourful palette, with dynamic and bold mark making, to palette knife work with exciting compositions and poses, this course has been created to show you a more varied and dynamic approach to portrait painting. Painters will have the opportunity to work from high-quality reference images (or you are welcome to bring your own preferred images to work from) as well as producing a portrait from a professional live model.

This course is suitable for artists who already have some experience of portrait painting.

During the course, you will cover:

  • Understanding colour temperature and saturation and why this is key

  • How to utilise dynamic and differing mark making in charcoal, pencil and paint

  • The similarities and differences to conventional/representational portraiture

  • Knowing what to include, what to leave out and knowing when to finish

The workshop will emphasise the importance of moving away from fussy, overworked painting and instead focusing on helping the artist to develop their own individual creative expression and impression of the subject.

What to Expect;

Day 1: Tonal Values: Drawing and getting a likeness through value

Day 2: Colour Saturation: Bright colours and muted tones

Day 3: Full day working from a live portrait model

Day 4: Expressive mark-making: Texture and mediums

Day 5: Finishing work: Evaluating work and when to finish

Artists can expect to produce a number of portraits, both preliminary studies and finished paintings, from both photographs and live models.

There will be a number of demonstrations throughout this Masterclass and in addition, handouts will be provided.

Plenty of time will be given to informal group and individual critiques, designed to help deepen your knowledge and understanding of both oil painting and expressive portraiture.

Artist quality oil paints by Michael Harding are provided for you to work with during this course, as well as most other materials and studio sundries.

You will need to bring brushes and some canvases - more details will be sent nearer the time.

"Peter is very approachable, clear and generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise and very constructive and helpful in his guidance throughout the practice, which makes the challenges of the learning experience more rewarding."

"An exceptional learning experience. Peter is able to get the very most of out the class with warmth, knowledge and humour - the best art workshop I've ever been on!"
