About this course

John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) is arguably the greatest portrait artist there has ever been. His paintings stem from a rich tradition of direct, observational oil painting and during this special and exciting new online course, Peter will both guide and demonstrate some of the methods and principles used by Sargent when painting the head-and-shoulders portrait.

During the 3 lessons, you will cover the following:

  • Producing a master-copy of one of Sargent’s famous head-and-shoulder portraits

  • How Sargent started his portrait paintings and exactly how we know his method

  • The lessons Sargent took from the Master Artists and how he used it in his own work

  • The importance of values and colour in Sargent’s work

  • How to suggest expression and feeling in your brushwork

  • Producing 2 new original paintings in the style and manner of Sargent, one of a gentleman and the other of an elegant lady (see images above).

What is included:

  • 3 × 2.5 hour video lessons

  • The ability to watch the lessons as many times as you need before Feb 2027.
