Learning from Sorolla

A 3-week online painting course producing 3 different original paintings inspired by the great Spanish master of light, Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923).

Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), the Spanish painter renowned for his luminous landscapes and vibrant depictions of sunlight, has profoundly influenced contemporary artists. His masterful handling of light and colour, particularly in scenes capturing the people of the Mediterranean coast, has inspired modern painters to explore similar themes, blending impressionistic techniques with personal expression. By embracing his legacy of vibrant palettes and dynamic brushwork, we will explore some of Sorolla's favoured painting methods and inspiring subjects.

This online, oil painting course will begin in December and is suitable for artists of all abilities, looking to improve their skills in this genre.

These virtual, paint-a-long lessons will run via Zoom on Monday mornings. You will also have the ability to re-watch the Zoom recording anytime, via this Zoom course website page, as many times as you like. 

During the 3 weeks, we will cover the following:

• Painting figures on the beach bathed in warm light

• How to control strong colour and create harmony in our painting 

• Learning Sorolla's loose and expressive brush techniques 

• Painting rich colourful fabric on a model

What is included:

• 3 x 3 hour Zoom sessions

• Watch the sessions live and have life-time access to re-watch the lessons as many times as you need 

• Teaching notes for each class posted to the lesson page once the class has taken place, including the photo Peter will be working from. 

• Excellent images to work from (or you can use your own images)

By the end of this course, you will have created at least 3 different paintings.

How to join this class:

First you need to sign up to this class by creating a username and password. This will be the details you enter each time you wish to join the live class or watch back a recorded lesson and to see the reference image Peter will be working from.

Each of the lesson pages (below) will include everything you need to take part in each live the lesson including the Zoom link, the reference image Peter will be working from, materials list and, once the lesson has taken place, the link for you to rewatch the class as many times as you need as well as the detailed written notes.
