About this course

One of the most exciting ways to enhance a sense of character, expression and personality is to use paint in a dynamic and expressive way, During these 3 lessons, we will paint 3 different head-and-shoulder portraits, exploring a more contemporary and exciting approach to depicting the face (see images for the 3 faces we will paint).

During the 3 lessons, we will cover the following:

  • Getting a painting off to a strong start

  • How to move away from gridding, tracing or projecting and gain confidence with drawing with the brush

  • The line between using ‘traditional’ colours and more exciting and unconventional ones.

  • How to stop your portrait painting becoming too tight and overworked

  • Capturing both likeness AND character in your portraits

  • Working with more than just the paint brush; we’ll explore other painting tools like the palette knife, rags, paper towels and card.

Who is this class for?

These classes are suitable for artists of all abilities, looking to improve their portrait painting skills, use colour more confidently and create inspiring and impactful portrait paintings with confidence and enjoyment.

Materials: This workshop will be taught with the medium of oil paint. However, artists working with acrylic paints are also warmly welcomed to join as many of the methods would be suitable for this medium.

By the end of this course, you will have created at least 3 different portrait paintings (ones that Peter has not painted before).

Peter uses oil paints throughout this course, although this course would also be of benefit to those artists who prefer working in acrylics as Peter does talk about how he would use acrylics in some of the lessons.
