NEW 2 day Oil Painting for Beginners: 9 - 10 November 2026

2 day course: 10am - 4pm
This course is designed for the beginner, or those artists who are looking to dip their toes into painting with oils for the first time.
Over the 2 days, Peter will guide you through the fundamentals of painting a landscape scene with these traditional paints, including:
The properties of oil paint
How to organise your palette
Working fat-over-lean, and what that means
Colour mixing
Glazes, mediums and painting tools
Working from excellent photographic landscape images (with an opportunity to bring your own images to work from) this course provides plenty of one-to-one instruction from Peter, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to create a solid basis and understanding, from which you can develop your oil painting.
During this 2 day course you can expect to produce 2 different landscape paintings.
What to bring:
Your preferred painting ground such as canvas/canvas board, approx 40 × 30cm
Paint brushes suitable for oil painting (hog/bristle hair brushes, sizes 2, 4, 6 and 8) - Peter will have brush sets for sale during the workshop.
Studio sundries such as palette knife, kitchen paper, wet-wipes, apron, sketch book for notes and any of your other preferred studio essentials.o

What is provided:
Peter will have a range of oil colours by Michael Harding available for you to use throughout the course, if you would like to use them. Alternatively, please bring your own oil paints

Location:
This course will take place at Peter’s own studio at the Village Hall in Botolph Claydon, MK18 2LR. As part of the workshop, participants will be invited to visit and explore Peter’s own working, on-site studio.
