2 day course: 10am - 4pm

This course is designed for the beginner, or those artists who are looking to refresh their knowledge and revise the core principles of portraiture or painting in oils.

Over the 2 days, Peter will guide you through his structured approach to creating a portrait, which includes the following key steps;

  • How to start a portrait

  • Mixing accurate flesh tones

  • Capturing facial details

  • Creating a good likeness

Working from excellent photographic images (with an opportunity to bring your own images to work from) this course provides plenty of one-to-one instruction from Peter, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of portraiture.

During this 2 day course you can expect to produce 1 head-and-shoulders portrait.

What to bring:

  • Your preferred painting ground such as canvas/canvas board, approx 50×40cm or bigger

  • Paint brushes suitable for oil painting along with your paint palette

  • Studio sundries such as palette knife, kitchen paper, apron, sketch book for notes and any of your other preferred studio essentials

  • Lunch

What is provided:

  • Peter will have a range of oil colours by Michael Harding available for you to use throughout the course, if you would like to use them. Alternatively, please bring your own oil paints

  • Studio easels, low odour solvent for oil painting, tables, chairs and other spare studio sundries

  • Teas, coffee and biscuits

Location:

This course will take place at Peter’s own studio at the Village Hall in Botolph Claydon, MK18 2LR. As part of the workshop, participants will be invited to visit and explore Peter’s own working, on-site studio.
