Learning from Sorolla: 26 - 28 March 2025 SOLD OUT
Dates Available:
26 - 28 March (Wed - Fri) 2025
3 day course: 10am - 4pm
Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), the Spanish painter renowned for his luminous landscapes and vibrant depictions of sunlight, has profoundly influenced contemporary artists. His masterful handling of light and colour, particularly in scenes capturing the people of the Mediterranean coast, has inspired modern painters to explore similar themes, blending impressionistic techniques with personal expression. By embracing his legacy of vibrant palettes and dynamic brushwork, we will explore some of Sorolla's favoured painting methods and inspiring subjects.
This 3 day painting course will focus on Sorolla's figure and beach paintings, where participants can expect to produce a small master copy of one of Sorolla's famous paintings and then produce an original painting of their own, inspired by his work.
Itinerary:
Day 1 will be spent learning the methods and steps Sorolla used in his painting whilst creating a small master copy of one of his figure beach paintings. Special attention will be paid to his use of colour and loose, free brushwork.
Day 2 will be spent beginning your own original Sorolla inspired figure beach painting on a stretched canvas you provide. The focus of this day will be spent on how Sorolla started his paintings, his use of tonal values and mastery of colour harmonies.
Day 3 will be spent continuing with the work started on day 2, with the emphasis on resolving the painting and exploring Sorolla's loose and expressive brushwork.
Artist quality Michael Harding oil paints are provided for this course, as well as excellent reference images, although artists are welcome to bring their own painting materials and reference images if they prefer.
