Waterperry Gardens Painting Workshops: 23, 24 & 25 June 2027
Dates available:
Wednesday 23rd June - £95
Thursday 24th June - £95
Friday 25th June - £95
Participants are welcome to join for 1 day, 2 days, or the full 3 days.
Following the sell-out success of the outdoor plein air painting days in 2026, for 2027, Peter will be visiting a beautiful new location for three days of painting; Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire.
What to expect
Join Peter and an enthusiastic group of painters for a plein-air painting workshop based at the famous Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire. The gardens provide a rich abundance of vistas, famous herbaceous borders as well as ornamental trees, statues and secluded corners, perfect for our painting inspiration. In addition, we will have the use of an onsite classroom, should the weather not allow for us to be outside all day.
Each daily workshop will include detailed demonstrations and lots of opportunities for one-to-one guidance in the gardens as you paint and/or sketch.
Although suitable for all abilities, a little previous painting experience would be beneficial to get the most out of the day.
The Venue
Waterperry Gardens is an ornamental garden. spanning over eight acres, just a stone’s throw from Oxford and within easy reach of London, being just off the M40. In addition to the ornamental gardens, there is the wider estate, an onsite tea room, an art gallery, a plant centre and a museum and there will be time to explore these outside of the workshop teaching hours.
Although this is primarily a plein-air (outside) painting workshop, in case of bad weather or for those who would prefer to, we have the option of painting in one of the onsite classrooms.
For further information about the venue, please click here to visit the Waterperry Gardens website.
Itinerary
Arrivals from 9:30am for a 10am start and introduction in the classroom, followed by a stroll out into the gardens. Peter will then give a short painting demonstration.
Lunch: 1-2pm followed by an afternoon painting demonstration
Finish: 4pm
Materials
Artists are asked to bring all their own painting materials. Peter will be working in oil paints or gouache although artists working in all mediums are warmly welcomed. During each day, Peter will do 1 painting demonstration, leaving plenty of time for your own painting, with Peter on hand for individual support and guidance.
Peter will be working with Michael Harding Oils or gouache paint in the following colours: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Crimson, Viridian, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine.
Other possible colours (but not essential) could include: Cadmium Yellow, Magenta, Purple, Sap Green, Raw Umber, Ivory Black.
Brushes: Appropriate brushes for your chosen medium. Peter uses Hog Filbert brushes from Rosemary & Co.
Grounds: Appropriate ground for your chosen medium. Peter will be using a primed, canvas board. Approx size 20x30cm
Other items: Field/French/portable easel, palette, painting medium or water, sketch pad and pencil, rags/tissues, carrier bag for waste and bottled water for water based artists. Optional travel/portable lightweight chair.
Walking expectations: Please be advised that this retreat includes some walking. You should feel physically fit and able to walk around the grounds of Waterperry, with your painting equipment. It is a 5min walk from the classroom to the main garden entrance.
Attire: We will be spending the time outdoors in the British weather, so come prepared for all eventualities. Sun hats, sunscreen and appropriate footwear is recommended.
Lunch: There is a very good onsite tea room, or you are welcome to bring your own lunch with you.
Parking: There is ample on-site parking next to the classroom where we will first meet. Further details on this will be emailed to you nearer the time.
