About this course:
Having led 3 different workshops at Westcott Barton over the last couple of years, Peter is delighted to be returning during the month of June in 2025 for 5 days when the grounds and gardens are at their most paintable. During this plein-air retreat (painting out side) you will explore painting exciting and colourful landscapes, seascapes and flowers all inspired by the north Devonshire area. Non-Painting partners warmly welcomed.
About Westcott Barton:
Westcott Barton is a former farm settlement over 400 years old and was mentioned in the Domesday Book Survey of 1086. Originally boasting two mills, the venue now hosts regular painting and creative retreats by many of the top UK painting tutors who take advantage of the beautiful medieval buildings, 2 acres of formal gardens, four ponds, a running stream, ancient forest and bluebell woodland and over 80 acres of surrounding countryside. The site is also home to a rich abundance of British wildlife due to it's unique location in a quiet, tranquil hidden valley.

What is included:
Full tuition including group demonstrations and plenty of 1-1 guidance, working from 10am - 4pm
Your choice of accommodation options on site
Full meals, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and daily refreshments
Transport provided for a days painting and sketching along the north Devon coastline
An evening meal on arrival day and breakfast on your day of departure
Transfers assistance if required
All participants are required to arrange the following:
Preferred painting tools and materials, suitable for plein-air work. A full materials list will be provided nearer the time. Portable field easels can be provided by prior arrangement. Studio tables, chairs, painting boards, portable stools are provided. Artists are welcome to work in oils, acrylics or gouache.
What to Expect:
This will be a plein-air painting workshop, allowing us the opportunity to paint and sketch outside in the extensive grounds and gardens of Westcott Barton. We will also have the luxury of of the bright and airy orangery studio should we need it.
Suitable for oil, acrylic and gouache painters, Peter will cover a range of landscape painting principals and techniques including;
Building a strong composition
Using values to enhance depth and space
Exploring exciting and vibrant colour harmonies
A looser and more expressive approach to painting
